Dn. Alan and Katie Melanson

By: Dn. Alan Melanson

In June of 2002, I made one of the smartest decisions in my life and asked Katie Lee Bates to marry me.  To my surprise, she accepted my proposal in front of 700 people at GOC2K2 in Selma, Alabama.  Because of our engagement, I flew to Long Island at least once a month and was able to celebrate the Eucharist with my future church family.  I noticed there was something slightly different in the Eucharistic prayers from what I was familiar with in Jacksonville.  Just before receiving the Eucharist, the congregation says,

“Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed”

This statement had a major impact on me and I began to say this response before receiving the Eucharist wherever I was.  I was beginning to truly believe that healing and restoration could take place by simply receiving the Sacraments of His Body and Blood.

At this time, I was working full-time at the Cathedral Church of the Messiah in Jacksonville, Florida – part-time youth pastor/part-time lawn man.  As you can imagine, cutting grass in the summertime in Florida was not a pleasant experience, but I tried to do the best I could as I served God by serving the Church.  One day, I was a little zealous with cutting the grass and began to mow through a large weed pile which was hiding poison ivy.  I just so happen to be extremely allergic to poison ivy.  My mother used to say that all I had to do was breathe within 25 feet of it and I would break out from head to toe.  Well, this day was no different.  My leg flared up the next day from the poison ivy.  That day the staff was having a meeting and celebrating the Eucharist together.  As I knelt at the altar rail, I prayed, “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.” I went about the rest of the day not thinking much about my leg with poison ivy.  It finally hit me at dinner time that my leg had stopped itching and I had not put any medicine on it since earlier that morning.  I looked down at my leg and there was still slight redness, but a majority of the bumps were gone and the itch was no longer there!

Now I am in full favor of “charismatic prayer times,” like our Crave service, but I always have to remind myself that God is truly present in the Eucharist and other Sacraments, such as Holy Unction (Anointing with Holy Oil).  If God is present in the Sacraments, and as our true Father wanting to give us good gifts (Luke 11), why don’t we bring our requests for healing to Him and truly believe the statement:

“Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed”

I urge you to approach the Eucharist with reverence and faith that God wants to bring healing to your life: physical, spiritual, and emotional.
